Comparing No-Fault Divorce Law and Contract Law
I recently found myself debating a group of younger folks about the merits and negative aspects of no-fault divorce law. We were comparing the differences between today's divorce laws and contract law. I was the only debate participant who had been married and through the divorce process.We were debating why marriage is less enforceable and less consequential than an ordinary business contract. I didn't find it surprising that the word, "love" came up quite often when discussing the issue of one party leaving a marriage. What lacked understanding was this, at the end of a marriage, the reason you married (love) has nothing to do with the problem at hand.Sure, neither fault or no-fault divorce laws are going to make someone who no longer loves you fall back in love with you but the kind of laws that govern the dissolution of a marriage will determine whether or not someone walks away financially damaged or not.I'm of the opinion that if a person needs to "go find themselves" they should be free to do so. Doing so should not however leave the other party to the marriage financially damaged or destitute. Mel Gibson: Love, Misery and Midlife Crisis
We've learned a lot about Mel Gibson over the last week. It would seem he's a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, and an anti-Semite with quite the oral fixation. From where I sit it would seem that Mel is also on the down-side of one hell of a Midlife Crisis.I don't think the man we are now seeing is the man he once was? Seven years ago Mel did an interview with the Daily Mail, below is a quote from that interview. It is Mel on his long-term marriage to then wife Robin."You're going to get ups and downs and you're going to get days when you really want to strangle each other. That is just going to happen. It doesn't matter who the other person is. You can think, 'Well, if I find someone else', but that's bullshit. You're going to go through the same old shit with anybody. You just have to adapt and give and take and receive and give. So you might as well stay where you're at and figure it out.'Every time that happens and you go through a dry spell - and in 22 years that happens a lot - when you come out the other side you're just so much better at it."Compare the words above to those we've all heard lately from Mel. He went from righteous family man to a man whose actions fly in the face of his previous belief system. And no doubt you've noticed the self-referential and grandiose thought patterns displayed. All typical signs of someone having a difficult time transitioning during midlife.The good news for Mel is that some do "come out the other side" and are much better "at it" whatever that "it" is. And, if lucky the wife and children they left behind will be waiting in the wings. It would seem, if reports are true that Mel will be one of the lucky ones.According to New York Magazine Mel has sold properties owned here in the U.S. and will move back to Australia. Some friends say plans are for his ex-wife Robin to also move with him.
